TARPAN (extinct)

Small species of wild horse, which is now extinct. The tarpan, sometimes considered to be the same as Przhevalski's wild horse, had a stocky body and short legs, and stood about 1.2 to 1.35 m (about 4 to 5 ft) high at the shoulder. In color it was generally gray. The tail and mane were black. Most of the herds were hunted down and killed because of their destructiveness to crops and the loss of domestic horses to their roaming bands. The tarpans survived until the late 19th or early 20th century. Scientific classification: The tarpan belongs to the family Equidae. It is classified as Equus caballus gmelini.
