BARB
Once known as the
Barbary, breed of horse native to Northwest Africa. One of the
oldest horse breeds, the Barb is second only to the Arabian for
its influence on the development of horse breeds throughout the
world. The Barb is an athletic horse capable of short bursts of
high speed and great endurance at slower speeds in desert heat.
It has a stocky, muscular body and stands about 153 cm (about 60
in, or 15 hands) high at the withers (the high part of the back,
located between the shoulder blades). The back is short and
straight, the shoulders long, and the chest broad and deep. The
hindquarters are sloping, and the slender legs have broad joints.
Its medium-length, well-muscled neck is arched and supports a
long, narrow head that is almost primitive in shape. The jaws are
pronounced and the nostrils flared. A Barb is a handsome horse
with a thin desert coat of black, gray, or bay (reddish). The
Barb was developed by the Berber people of Northwest Africa
around the 1st century BC. The Moors, who were descendants of
Berbers and Arabs, introduced the Barb to southern Europe during
the Moorish invasions in the 7th and 8th centuries AD. The Barb
crossed with European horse breeds during these invasions, and
characteristics of the Arabian were introduced to the Barb as
well.
