MORGAN HORSE

Breed of horse developed in the U.S. in the early 19th century. The breed is compact and usually reddish, but its coat may be brown or black. The horse is notable for being an ancestor of other important U.S. breeds such as the standardbred, the Tennessee walker, and the American saddle horse. The progenitor of the breed dates from about 1800 and was named for its innkeeper owner, Justin Morgan.
